Where the story begins… The tapestry of immigration begins with a courageous heart that for one reason or another ventures beyond its motherland to a new beginning in a foreign land. It is a journey marked with challenges unique to every individual and each surely a story unto itself. The Evergreen Pioneers are Swiss women with a unique spirit, colored with the extraordinary qualities of courage, curiosity, and strength. They are a crucial piece of the Swiss immigration puzzle carrying precious memories and stories of at least two generations. They are where the story begins… We recognize these women to be keepers of an oral history of the immigration of Swiss Women to the United States and believe we have an obligation towards future generations of Swiss to capture and preserve the unique history of Swiss women in the United States. These women are a timeless legacy of self-reinvention, strength, and living history of their Swiss roots for younger Swiss women to come. To this end, the Swiss American Council of Women has initiated the following projects dedicated to promoting and honoring Swiss women who are 60+ years “Evergreen”: 1. Web Page Documenting Evergreen Stories: A web page and special logo exclusively dedicated to Evergreen women to document and share their stories with our communities and the world. If you or anyone else you know is a Swiss woman 60+ years “Evergreen”, please send in your story and photo to info@swissamericanwomen.org. 2. Swiss National Day - Evergreen Women Honored On July 29th four Evergreen Pioneer charter members will be introduced and honored by our community during the Swiss National Day Celebration on Ellis Island. These SACW members are: Dr. Margot Amman-Durrer, Elsbet Reimann, Evelyn Ronnel and Alice O’Connor. Each of these women will receive a special pin by the Swiss women they mentor. 3. Documentary Film and Book – “Evergreen” SACW is proud to announce the beginning of a documentary film and book that will celebrate the uniqueness of Swiss women and honor their essential contribution to the development of the Swiss community in the United States. The documentary is aptly named “Evergreen” in honor of our special women’s group within the Swiss American Council of Women. A synopsis of the documentary is posted under our news announcement. Please do not forget… The tapestry of the immigration of Swiss Women is a story that has yet to be written. We know that each woman is a crucial part of the puzzle that shapes the future of the story of Swiss and their families in the United States. You too are part of the story! We need your support and welcome you to be a part of history by making a contribution to the Evergreen documentary. Help us honor The Voice of Helvetia, and the face of Switzerland – it’s women!
